3 Reasons Seniors Should Speak to a Physician After Any Fall
Despite being a regular occurrence in seniors, the majority of falls are never reported to primary physicians. The primary culprit? Pride. Slip and fall accidents are often seen as proof of advancing age and rapid health decline, despite this being far from the truth. Even young people fall and injure themselves. It simply becomes more common as age progresses and is nothing to be embarrassed about.
Plus, falls should always be reported to a senior’s primary physician – and here are three good reasons why:
1. Not All Damage Is Immediately Evident
Even if an injury is not immediately obvious at the time of the fall does not mean it does not exist. The only way to ensure that no damage was done is to follow up with your primary physician. Some issues – such as hairline fractures – may not present themselves for days to weeks after an accident, and can quickly escalate if left without treatment.
2. Minor Injuries Could End Up Major Ones
Without proper treatment, evaluation, and support a minor injury can end up being a major one. What seems to be miniscule right now could potentially cause lifelong pain or even disability if not given proper post-treatment support.
3. Primary Physicians Need To Monitor Your Ongoing Health
Doctors should always be aware of falls and other accidents, so that they can monitor a senior’s health moving forward. If, for example, falls become a common occurrence, a doctor can help to evaluate what is causing them. You don’t know if a single fall will turn into a reoccurring incident until much later. At that point, it may be too late to receive proper intervention.
