5 Summer Activities for Seniors
Summer’s a great time for being outdoors, cooling off in the pool, or spending the day at an amusement park. For those who have reached retirement age, you may have trouble doing things that require high energy like shooting hoops or taking a long hike. That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun this season! Here’s a few things ways you can enjoy the fresh air this summer and even get some light exercise.
1. Aqua Aerobics
This is a great way to escape from the summer heat. This exercise is easy on the joints, improves your coordination and balance, helps build up muscle mass, and it’s great for your heart! Taking an aqua aerobics class is also a great way to get in shape: your physical health, particularly your heart, becomes even more important the older you are!
2. Taking a Walk
A simple stroll around the block can do wonders for your mood. Walking for as little as thirty minutes can improve your heart health. Enjoy the sights and sounds of your neighborhood, or go to a nearby park to get more in touch with nature.
3. Gardening
Keeping a garden can be a fulfilling experience, and it’s particularly great for seniors. It’s a light aerobic activity that anyone can do, and it doesn’t take a lot of time out of your day. Building up flexibility and strength in your hands while gardening can help prevent arthritis.
4. Have a Picnic
This is an activity that the whole family can enjoy. It’s a great way to spend the whole day outside, relaxing at a park with a healthy meal. Spread out a blanket and enjoy your picnic lunch with a book or bring playing cards for some games afterward.
5. Bird Watching
This is a more low-key activity, but a great way to connect with nature. Rising with the sun to look at the beautiful wildlife can give you time for calm reflection and meditation.
