Afraid To Take A Vacation With Parents in Assisted Living?
It’s that time of the year again-vacation time. In previous years you may have taken the whole family with you to your favorite vacation spot. But this year is different. You’re looking forward to a vacation alone or with certain family and friends, and you won’t be taking your loved one with you this time. Here are four conversations you should have with your parent before leaving for your trip.
Explain Why you are Going Without Them
Your loved one might feel slighted at first when they find out you are leaving without them. You can help put their mind at ease by explaining the specific reasons you can’t bring them along. There could be a lot of walking during this trip that they will not be able to do, or the hours spent traveling by plane or car would be too much for them to handle. When they understand that the trip would be too hard on them, they will certainly feel better about staying behind.
Ask for Assistance From Family Members
There is no shame in asking your extended family for help when it comes to an elderly family member. Set up dates and times for family to check on them while you are away. This will also help your loved one to feel loved and supported while you are gone. Leave contact information behind so they can get in touch with someone when they need to.
Set Up Daily Reminders
Your parent is probably used to a certain routine, but it helps to set them up with reminders of what they need to do. Create an easy-to-read chart that lists medication reminders, appointment dates, when to eat and any other personal information that will be helpful to them while you are gone.
Leave Personal Information About Your Trip
Make sure to leave all of your contact information with your loved one before you head out on vacation. Include hotel and flight information, where you will be, phone numbers and the date you will return. Make sure they are aware that they can contact you whenever they need to.
