Senior Living: Keeping the Mind Sharp
Brain atrophy commonly occurs in older adults. It causes memory loss and dulls cognitive function. There are steps seniors can take to keep the aging mind sharp. Make a plan for better senior living that will help you retain your brain power.
Nutrition affects brain functioning. Rush University claims the MIND diet fights the onset of dementia. This eating program was specially designed for older adults with the idea of keeping the brain from deteriorating. It promotes eating berries, vegetables, fish, nuts, olive oil, beans and wine. The diet discourages consumption of red meat, butter, cheese, fast foods and processed sweets.
Physically active adults suffer fewer problems with brain functioning. A sound body might mean a sound mind. Walking, sitting exercises and water aerobics are excellent ways for seniors to get their blood pumping. Even older persons confined to their beds are often capable of performing simple exercises while lying down. Physical activities also help combat depression, a mental health condition believed to contribute to cognitive impairment.
Learning new things sharpens the mind. Try working jigsaw puzzles and completing crosswords to keep your brain engaged. Talk to someone new in your life. Fresh conversations can spark learning that keeps the mind working. Learn some tongue twisters and practice saying them. The concentration involved will help you with cognition.
Another key way to keep the mind sharp is to sleep well. Many seniors experience insomnia or disrupted sleep that can weaken the brain as well as impact all aspects of life. Some recommendations to sleep better are going to bed at the same time every night, refraining from drinking caffeine, especially in the evening, not indulging in daytime naps, turning off televisions at bedtime. If you have severe sleep issues, see your physician who can test for a sleep disorder. Good sleep is necessary for your brain, so make every effort to obtain it.
